There's More Than it May Seem...

The thought will rarely ever come to mind when speaking to others in a meeting, classroom, or grocery store that an individual is on their period. The kind of pain that some go through for even over a week is unimaginable to those whom have never gone through it.

The truth is that we’ve learnt to conceal the facial expression of pain when our insides feel like they’re being stabbed.

We’ve grown up from a young age to not speak about being on your period. With women, sure, but only in confidentially. Men? That’s completely out of the question.

But why? Why have we grown up with our elders telling us to buy pads and tampons in a black plastic bag, hiding the fact that i am purchasing sanitary napkins?

Being on your period does NOT make you dirty, does not make you impure. It is just something proving that you are not pregnant…

Feeling like you cannot physically get out of bed, walking like someone is clenching your organs, having mood swings and your mind not being able to focus on tasks- there’s a lot more than what those who do not go through periods do not even realize.

This is not me saying give us sympathy. But rather more to inform those who think that “it’s not a big deal” and we’re “overreacting.” The level of pain may be less for some but way more for others. There’s no general one umbrella level of pain.

It’s time that we don’t limit conversations about periods to just females. Have these discussion with the entire family. Men need to be educated about this topic as much as women need to.

Why you may ask do you need to know if you’re not going through it?

Simple answer - support. To support your partner, sister, mom, friend. If they need something then they should feel free to ask. Whether that’s to buy them a box of tampons or to simply just be there with them. No one is asking for you to go through the pain for us. Just simply support.

And this by no means means that we cannot do things ourselves.

Do not fall under that impression because we have been doing these things our entire lives without help! From going to the grocery store, to holding presentations and meetings, to even hosting massive events. Trust me, we’ve done it all while being in major pain without most people knowing.

Let’s talk more openly and have more discussions. Have anything to add? Drop it in the comments section or my dms! I would love to talk and have a conversation, take care lovelies ♥️
